Israel and Palestine agree to a new 72-hour
cease fire
by Nathan'ette Burdine: August 12, 2014

The BBC reported that Israel, Palestine, and Hamas have agreed to a new 72-hour cease fire, which began on Sunday.

The war between Israel and Hamas began on July 8, 2014, after Hamas fired rockets into Israel. There have been previous cease fires.

However, the cease fires quickly ended after rockets were fired from Gaza into Israel. The longest cease fire was the 72-hour cease fire Israel and Hamas agreed to last Monday.

The BBC reported that the negotiations for extending the previous 72-hour cease fire were stalled after Palestine and Hamas expressed concerns about Israel wanting Hamas to disarm and Israel refusing to remove military forces from the Gaza border.

According to the BBC, Israel and Hamas didn’t discontinue the airstrikes until sometime during the evening on Sunday.

Despite the airstrikes on Sunday, both sides agreed to meet in Egypt, which is acting as an intermediary, in order to continue the negotiations.
